Whole Kids Foundation's garden grant recipients are located throughout the US and Canada. We are currently in the process of extending grant offers to Fall 2011 applicants and will continue to extend grants on a rolling basis as we raise additional funds.

We currently have raised beds but are interested in developing vertical gardening beds and container gardens for students who are unable to plant in the ground at home. Our garden goal this is to double the number of participants by creating a garden club "ACE's." By doubling the number of students from 36 to 72 we will need more funding for purchasing fresh vegetables and fruits to serve to the students in addition to what is being served in the cafeteria. I found that last year I enjoyed sharing my salads ranging from watercress avocado and let's not forget all the berries they enjoyed such as raspberry and black berry. These are non-cafeteria foods.

My ultimate goal is to have an edible garden accessible to each grade level. We currently have an edible garden in the Pre-K courtyard. A wooden raised-bed edible garden is in process for the second grade. Using this grant I want to create several concrete block raised gardens near the Science and Math labs accessible to all other students. Working with the grade-level chairpersons as well as our Math Writing and Science coaches we will incorporate the garden into daily lessons.

The garden goal for Hillcrest Vocational Agriculture is to grow hydroponic vegetables. This is the first time hydroponics will be used at Hillcrest School which is a center school for special needs students. The new system will make gardening more physically accessible to the students. They will sell the vegetables or fruits harvested at a reduced rate to the community. It will provide the opportunity for the community to be in contact with special needs young adults and see their potential.

Our goal is to expand the existing gardening space so that is it available as a teaching space for the entire fourth grade eventually involving other grade levels as well. The expansion would give all fourth grade classes the opportunity to learn about healthy and sustainable food while giving them a hands-on learning environment that can be used across the curriculum.

Last year's results far exceeded our expectations and students are looking forward to the continuation of this garden project. I want to create 6 100 sq foot raised beds with railroad ties. I want cooperative groups to be responsible for their specific bed. This would entail choosing seed growing the seed in a green house cleaning plot transplanting and watering and weeding. Each group would share their yield with other students and through E. Sarasota I want to invite local chefs to come in and prepare dishes from our yield. I plan to incorporate academics through a mini farmers market in the future.

Currently our garden grows herbs and spices which we hope to expand to include fresh vegetables and fruits. This grant would help us obtain the necessary supplies to do so. We hope to replicate this garden at other schools so that students and faculty can learn more about food production and the need to be self- sufficient and craft lesson plans around the garden (math science civics). Eventually we hope that our garden will be plentiful and become a source to donate to food banks.
