Meet Our Friends at Bellwether Farms!
Tell us a bit about the history of Bellwether Farms:
Bellwether Farms is a family business founded in 1986 - the first sheep dairy west of the Mississippi - and has been making artisan cheese since 1990. Family matriarch Cindy Callahan tends to the flock while her son and his wife, Liam and Diana Callahan, are cheesemaker and business manager, respectively. Bellwether Farms crafts a family of aged and fresh sheep and cow milk cheeses and yogurts using time-honored traditions and the finest whole milk sourced for their flock and neighboring family farms. Located on 35 acres in Sonoma County, Bellwether Farms is dedicated to sustainable agricultural practices, ethical animal husbandry and crafting the highest quality dairy products possible.
Why did you partner with Whole Kids Foundation?
In 2016 the Callahan’s marked their thirtieth year in business by establishing the Bellwether Farms Foundation. They are sharing their success by pledging one percent of annual sales to strengthen the food system, support organizations which provide hunger relief and food-related education to local communities. This commitment to investing in kids learning about and eating good food, marries perfectly with the mission of Whole Kids Foundation and growing healthy kids. Bellwether Farms sheep and organic cow milk yogurts are packed with nutrition kids need and parents want to establish an active, healthy lifestyle for their family. We plan to interact with schools in Sonoma County who participate in School Gardens and Salad Bar programs fostered by Whole Kids Foundation.
