Partying the Day Away

Almost 500 kids were treated to an amazing School Garden Party at the Moulton Extended Learning Center thanks to Kristin Steinbach, Marketing and Community Relations Specialist. The school had Earth Day activities already planned, and when West Des Moines opened, the store wanted to get in on the fun!

Under the Tent

Classes took turns rotating through 30 minute stations in the garden. The WFM tent marked the first station, which included spinning the prize wheel for goodies provided by WKF’s sponsors, including:

  • Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day garden kits
  • Suja juices
  • Activity books from Organic Valley and Cascadian Farms with crayons
  • Wooden nickels redeemable for free produce at the West Des Moines store
  • Reusable WFM tote bags

Also under the tent were “Eat the Rainbow” activities with fresh produce, along with Organic Valley string cheese and Applegate hotdogs for all to enjoy.

Growing Sunflowers

At the second station, Food Corp volunteers showed kids how to make their own ScrapKins Seed Starter. Everyone took home instructions and sunflower seeds to make their own, along with crayons to decorate it!

Created by an outside organization, the last station complemented West Des Moines’ activities perfectly. Students used plastic litter they collected in the neighborhood to fill wire-form letters spelling out “THINK.” This powerful art will permanently remain in the neighborhood as a reminder of the impact of non-recyclable materials.
