Help Harvest at a Local Farm

Overland Park Store, Overland Park, Kansas

  • Volunteer at a local organic farm for a Kids Day of Service
  • Allow time for kids to ask questions about organic and urban farming
  • Serve volunteers a yummy lunch with a rainbow of veggies

Volunteers of all ages harvested the day away at Gibbs Road Farm, an organic urban farm in Kansas City, Kansas that is part of the Cultivate Kansas City network. Overland Park’s Kids Day of Service was not only a way to help the community, but also to learn about organic and urban farming.

Helping Out

Kids and parents, along with WFM Team Members Penny Fenning, Dianna Sinni, and Paula Proud, spent a day caring for the urban garden. Plants needed watering and sunflower seeds and beets were ready for harvesting. Kids had a ton of fun pulling fresh beets out of the ground!

Learning More

Farmer Jill Erickson was on hand to answer questions about farming organically in a city. At the end of the day, kids took home both beets and new knowledge to share with their families.

Plan Your Own

Overland Park has an ongoing partnership with Cultivate Kansas City, so it was easy to work with Gibbs Road Farm to organize a Kids Day of Service. Paula began planning the event in July, in order to find a date that worked for the store and Gibbs Road.

The total cost for this event was about $150, which covered food ordered ahead of time.

You can organize an event like this any time of year it makes sense for your store. No need to wait for a Global Kids Day of Service to host an event this fantastic!
